Week 2 started out with Strouf’s Team White taking on Donny Goltiao’s Team Maroon. It was good to see 46th overall pick Donnie Glasenapp in the rotation this week for Team White. Team Maroon was happy to see him in the rotation also. With both teams coming into this game undefeated, we all knew that both teams were going to come out guns smoking. But it was quickly evident that only one man on the court had the smoking gun. Team White’s Justin Nichols couldn’t miss a shot folks. With Justin’s 24 points and Glasenapp’s 2 points, the White team walked away with this win in the bag.
Game 2 featured Jared Goltiao’s Team Green and Phil Rossi’s Team Blue. With Team Green being coached by Justin Foreman, I was positive they were going to "get the job done". With Team Blue’s biggest man, Steven Russ, being much undersized by the Team Green’s bigs(Roepke, O’Malley, and Rocha), Team Blue would have to come up with a plan to get to the hoop. Fortunately for Team Blue, Coach Foreman kept Donald Rocha in for much of the game so there wasn’t too much of a plan to come up with. Team Green’s Rocha quickly became Team Blue’s best player, allowing Team Blue to score at will down low. Just a quick reminder…if the other team has the ball you usually play defense. Or at least try to get the rebounds and try to protect the paint. Needless to say, Team blue was able to leave the court with a W. I had the chance to talk to Coach Foreman after the game to get his thoughts. “It is what it is” was his comment.
The day would close out with Jordan Fanara’s Team Red going head to head with Anwar’s Team Black. With a hard loss still on their minds, Team Black came into this game with a purpose. Seeing the outcome of the previous game…Team Red had Justin Foreman coach them also. Hopefully he would "do it to it" this time. But from the beginning of the game it seemed like nothing was going right for Team Red. Even Team Black David Beale’s no look pass to no one was last touched by Team Red before going out of bounds. On top of that, Team Black’s Trevor Heims was literally unstoppable… scoring from every spot on the court. Sam Ali’s trash talking was just as good as Trevor’s shooting. With all the trash talk Sam did you would have thought for sure he scored more than 4 points on Saturday. At the end of the game, Black Team’s Trevor Heims ended the night with 38 points which ultimately lifted his team to victory. Coach Foreman’s comments after the game… “It is What it is”
Player of the Week – Trevor Heims
This week we don’t have an inspirational player of the week, we have an inspirational Coach of the week – Justin Foreman
Week one opened up with Justin Nichol’s Team White, going head to head with Jared Goltiao’s Team Green. I knew Team White would have to dig deep since they were playing without last year’s #3 overall pick, this year’s #46 out of 49 overall pick, Donnie Glasenapp. Despite the absence of Glasenapp’s 1 for 20 shooting, Team Green could not stop the tenacity of Team White’s Michael Strouf. Not even Ethan Roepke’s lime green “viva Mejiko” shirt could faze Strouf’s shot. By the way, I do appreciate Wilson Leppert allowing Roepke to borrow his lime green shirt, however next week Roepke should probably borrow one of John O'Malley’s lime green shirts. From the start of the game things didn’t look good for Team Green. Michael Strouf’s hot hand proved to be too much. If only Team Green could have drafted Oregonian Phenom - Georgetown hopeful - Corey Rauch, it would have been a different story. Team White walked away with the win.
Game 2 would feature Jordan Fanara’s Team Red and Phil Rossi’s Team Blue. This game would literally go down to the last second. It was almost déjà vu of Phil Rossi’s opening game last year. Down by one with only ten seconds left in the game. The ball once again ended up in Rossi’s hands. 8..7..6..5..Rossi drives to the baseline…4..3..pulls up for the fade away... NO GOOD! I guess you could say, almost déjà vu... but last year his shot went in. Team Red would squeak out of this one by the skin of their teeth. If only Team Blue could have drafted Oregonian Phenom - Georgetown hopeful - Corey Rauch, it would have been a different story.
The last bout of the night would be Donny Goltiao’s Team Maroon against Anwar’s Team Black. And folks, can I say, THIS WAS A BOUT! I think Donny Goltiao and Sam Ali would have been better off wearing boxing gloves. Team Black came out of their corner swinging and quickly took an early lead, but Team Maroon would not be denied. Once again, for the 3rd year in a row, Black Team’s David Beale stayed consistent with his no look passes, consistently passing to the wrong team. But don’t worry, David, purple shorts wearing Sam Ali stayed consistent on his "no passes". Definition of Basketball – a game played by two teams consisting of five players. But before we all throw stones at Sam, I must say his game was consistent all around. Consistent bricks, consistent wines, consistent traveling. I wish I was on his frequent flier plan. Reminder… you have four teammates, not four steps before or after you pick up your dribble. Needless to say, Team Maroon stormed back to take this bout by two. If only Team Black could have drafted Oregonian Phenom - Georgetown hopeful - Corey Rauch, it would have been a different story.
Player of the Week – Mike Strouf, scoring 20 points to lead his team to victory.
Inspirational Player of the Week – Sam Ali for brightening everybody’s Monday Morning.
